Costa Rica: Sustainable Tourism for the New Year

According to The International EcoTourisms Society, Costa Ricans live with more trees per capita and per square kilometer than any country in the world. It goes on to say that Costa Ricans are also among the world’s most enthusiastic tree planters, planting a few million tree each year.

Costa Rica is a naturally peaceful country and the oldest and most stable country in Central America. It abolished its standing army in 1948 and its president Oscar Arias Sanchez received the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to promote peace and nature.

  • Geography: The country’s highest point is Cerro Chirripo at more than 12,000 ft. It is the fifth highest peak in Central America.  Costa Rica’s highest volcano is Irazu Volcano at more than 11,000 ft. The country also has several island two of which are Cocos Island and Calero Island
  • Climate: Costa Rica’s climate is diverse and very varied. The sun tends to shine throughout the year and there is not very really winter season. The International Ecotourism Society notes that the main reason for the diversity in Costa Rica’s weather is the various elevations at which different parts of the country is located.
  • Biodiversity: About more than 20 % of Costa Rica’s national territory is protect land. Costa Rica is considered to be one of the 20 countries with the greatest biodiversity in the world. The country’s two coasts, its geographic position and its mountainous system provides varied microclimates and explains why the country has such a vast natural wealth, both in species and ecosystems.

  1. Costa Rica Association of Rural Community Tourism: is an association of rural tourism initiatives that consists of planned touristic experiences that are integrated sustainably with the rural environment. And according to the Costa Rican Tourism Board developed by local citizen organizations for the benefit of the community.
  2. National Certification Program: provided by the Costa Rican Tourism Institute which then differentiates tourism businesses based on several degrees of compliance with a sustainable model.
  3. Sustainable Vacations: Rainforest Alliance’s Eco-Index Sustainable Tourism features businesses that have been rated as environmentally and socially friendly by highly regarded environmental organizations and ecotourism certification programs.
