Wildlife Photographer & Author Pens Best of Manuel Antonio Travel Guide
There’s a new style guidebook in town. Author Evelyn Gallardo has created not just a travel guide but rather an intimate portrait of the best that the beach resort Manuel Antonio and its adjacent town of Quepos have to offer.
You’ll still want to bring along your traditional guidebook for the big picture but if you’re headed to Manuel Antonio, this is a must-read, intimate, insider’s guide that will have you feeling like a local before you even arrive at this extraordinary community of Ticos and expats, who’ve chosen paradise as their home.
“You have a guide book that lists the best in each business category, so how to you keep peace with everybody, the rest of the businesses,” I asked?
Evelyn laughed and answered, “I leave ballots all over Manuel Antonio and Quepos for local residents to do the voting. This way it’s a community project. The first year some people didn’t quite grasp the concept, didn’t vote, then were disappointed when their favorites didn’t win. This year the number of votes tripled. I also do a survey on Facebook asking for suggestions for new categories, content, quotes about the winners, etc. Each year we get more community participation.”
Instead of a book launch party, Gallardo recently hosted an awards party at the “Best Local Hangout” – Barba Roja. Awards were presented to the category winners in front of the entire community who gathered to honor and celebrate their favorites. The book is available in Manuel Antonio at Jaime Peligro Bookstore and at Mini Price Store, and also online at Amazon.com in both ebook or paperback edition.
Evelyn is a transplant from Manhattan Beach California, and insists, “If you’re thinking of traveling to Costa Rica, keep in mind that Playa Manuel Antonio was rated the number 1 Best Beach in Central America by TripAdvisor Traveller’s Choice in 2013. Also, Manuel Antonio National Park is rated among the World’s Most Beautiful National Parks by Forbes Magazine.”
Evelyn Gallardo is also the author of the award winning book, “Among the Orangutans: The Biruté Galdikas Story”. She is a well-seasoned explorer having traveled to more than 30 countries from Argentina to Zaire. She once hitched cargo boats up the Amazon for a month. She volunteered on the Orangutan Project with Dr. Biruté Galdikas in Borneo, which resulted in the book, and at the Karisoke Research Center Mountain Gorilla Project with Dr. Dian Fossey where she was once charged by a silverback leader.
Evelyn is an accomplished professional wildlife photographer, and has created over 120 videos on youtube.com, many about her vacation rental on the beach in Manuel Antonio – a private reserve of several acres that attracts several varieties of monkeys, sloths and other wildlife that guests enjoy. Below is one of her most popular videos – an introduction to Manuel Antonio Beach and her home, often used for weddings, with a hilarious and surprise ending.
