Mario Boza Costa Rica Conservationist Speaks Out

I think that your blog, as any other international magazine publishing articles about our country, should give emphasis to the environmental problems that overdevelopment is causing in our country.

In the past, the enemies of conservation were banana plantations, cattleraising and deforestation.  Now the main enemy is overdevelopment, although pineapple plantations are also a problem.

All our forests along the Pacific coast are being cut, or are endangered, in order to create open space for hotels, houses and other facilities.  Marinas are destroying, or are threatening, corals, turtle beaches and mangroves. The worst is that a bill was presented to Congress by a congressperson to segregate a portion of Baulas National Marine Park, commandeering a hill that is ideal for building houses with a superb view. Unbelievable!

Of course, we are fighting against this barbarity. But our problem is that we have to waste most of our time just fighting, and not doing other important things in favor of conservation.  And we have to add to all of this the lack of commitment from the Ministry of the Environment and the Government in general.

International pressure could help a lot.  With this I am talking about international activism.  Messages of concern for what is happening in the country could make a difference.

This is the picture.  Anything that could be published in your blog, inviting people to send letters or messages of concern for the environmental situation in the country, would be very welcome.  Any letter should be sent to President Oscar Arias, Casa Presidencial, San Jose, Costa Rica (<msolera@casapres.go.cr>), with copy to Director, Periodico La Nacion, San Jose, Costa Rica (<aurbina@nacion.com>).  LaNacion is the most important newspaper.
